What this category covers

Basic Care and Comfort is one of the eight client needs categories in the NCSBN NCLEX-RN test plan. Expect questions on Assistive devices, Pressure injuries, Tube feedings, Diets, Elimination, and Nonpharmacological comfort.

How to study Basic Care and Comfort
  • Review assistive device teaching: cane on the strong side, crutch stairs ('up with the good, down with the bad'), walker sequence.
  • Know diet types (clear vs. full liquid, low sodium, renal, high iron) and tube-feeding safety: head of bed at least 30 degrees, placement confirmed by x-ray before first use.
  • Prevent immobility complications: turn every 2 hours, ROM, cough and deep breathing, no massage of reddened bony areas.
  • Practice intake and output math with household-to-metric conversions (1 oz = 30 mL).
